My Soul Speaks to Me… Reflections on 2020

My soul is ready to be free…

My soul is yearning to be free, light and easy.

My soul is yearning to release the pain and disease of a horrific time.

My body wants to run through fields

Cartwheeling and rolling in the grass

Yipping and screaming and singing a nonsensical song.

My soul is ready to open up and reconnect to my inner child

Pull out my crayons and draw on the walls

Paint a wall with chalkboard paint and play tic tac toe.

My soul is yearning for rest

To get a good night sleep for once.

Not waking at 3 am worrying about face masks, gloves

And whether my handsome tall brown son will be shot in the street

Just for being alive and “fitting the description”.

My soul is yearning for unity.

To link hand in hand with strangers from various lands

Hug everybody and have deep soulful conversations over a chai latte.

Now we get to recreate a world in which

Freedom is for everyone…

Not just those who who look, earn, love and walk a certain way in the world

My soul is yearning to create

A world where we are once again free…

Free to love

Free to embrace

Free to go off on an amazing vacations

With other creative and powerful souls

Free to go to my family for a hearty Thanksgiving.

Hug and kiss all the babies

Eat too much and play games

Whooping and hollering until wee hours of the morning

My soul is ready for change.

My body is weary and electric at the same time

Relieved that good and right is coming back in fashion

Yet tense and poised to fight or flee

Because half the country does not believe I should be free.

My soul is ready to hope…

To create a new reality for future generations

To embrace the feisty young folk who aren’t so jaded

They believe that we can and will create an America we can be proud of.

My soul is ready for joy.

My soul is ready for rest.

My soul is ready to open up again and live.

I’ve been holding my breath and contracted for nearly a year

It’s time to be free.
